Sexy Corset Shapewear Brings a Little '50 Shades' Into Your Workout

I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to working out and staying healthy. Crazy new trendy workout class? Sure, I'll give it a try. Spending a few days seeing if juice cleansing is for me? Eh, why not? So when I was approached to test out the Workout Band by Ann Cherry, a waist cinching undergarment (read: a bright blue corset) that's meant to be worn to the gym to enhance your workout -- I was intrigued.

OK, intrigued is an understatement. The notion that I was going to be this constricted while running, sweating on the elliptical, and lifting weights sounded less than ideal. But heck, if it worked for Jessica Alba, it could work for me, right?

Well, yeah, let's talk about that ...


First, let's talk about how the Workout Band ($52.99, is supposed to work. Users wrap the band around their midsection before getting active. When worn correctly, the band is supposed to "create compression in your core, stimulate thermal activity, and ramp up perspiration."

I went into it with an open mind. It took me a solid 5 minutes to get the thing into place. (Clearly, I don't wear corsets often.) The corset, which fits at the waist and stops below the bust, felt a little awkward -- as if there was a bra portion that was missing. When combined with my sports bra, I felt a bit foolish. I'm sure if my boyfriend saw what I was wearing under my Nike pullover, he would have laughed uncontrollably.

To really test the band out, I took it for a light 2-mile run, and then I did some light weight work back at my apartment. The benefits of the band: I did feel like my posture was better while running. There definitely was a lot of sweat when I removed the undergarment, more so than when I wear my typical workout garb.

The negatives? Well, it wasn't really the most comfortable thing I've ever worn (again, we're talking about a CORSET you wear to workout, ladies). Although the boning of the corset was flexible, I felt like any bending, stretching, or leaning was pretty difficult. At times, I felt like my workout was restricted because I was wearing the thing.

So would I recommend it? While I'm all for shapewear when you're getting fancy for a night out on the town, I'd skip it for your workout. It did make me feel skinnier and toned when I put it on. And sure, there's tons of research out there that says if you look good while working out, you'll workout better. I'd just rather go natural during my sweat sesh, without being constricted.
