E. L. James Is Worried '50 Shades' Movie Will Disappoint Fans

e l jamesYou know what they say: Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it! That axiom certainly seems to be true in the case of E. L. James, at least. On the one hand, the Fifty Shades of Grey author is pretty much living every writer's wildest fantasy right now -- not only did her erotic trilogy make her the world's highest paid writer, but it's now (as you are more than well aware) being made into one of the most highly anticipated movies in history. So what's the problem? Well, now that the filming is about to start, James says she's "completely terrified"!

"I’ve been terrified from the moment I published the book," she says. "You don’t expect this kind of success. Even now it floors me. My only ambition for the books was to see them in bookstores. This is huge. And there is this passionate fandom; we need to get this right for them."

James went on to say that she expects fans to hold her fully responsible if they don't like the film:

"Oh God, of course they will. They hold me responsible for everything."

That's a lot of pressure -- I guess I don't blame her for being terrified! Not only does James have to worry about the director and cast potentially not getting the book right, she's got that rabid fan base to please. But would it really be her fault if the movie wasn't up to snuff? After all, while James says she does have script approval, she has "not so much" creative control -- so if director Sam Taylor-Johnson decides she wants to take things in a direction that doesn't quite match up with James' vision, there's not much the writer can do about it. That would be scary, from an author's point of view. But I think it's really sweet, not to mention admirable, that James is so concerned with her fans' reaction to the film. I mean, let's be frank: Even if everybody hates the movie, she's never gonna have to work a day in her life again. They could re-cast the leads with Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy and James would still be laughing all the way to the bank. But she does care, and that says a lot.

Do you think the Fifty Shades movie will disappoint fans?
