Ryan Gosling in 'Only God Forgives' Trailer Is Terrifyingly Hot (VIDEO)

Ryan GoslingI loved Ryan Gosling in Drive so much, I was beyond thrilled to hear he'd teamed up with the same director (Nicolas Winding Refn) for a new crime thriller called Only God Forgives. Just that single piece of information -- "Hey, Ryan Gosling and his Drive director made another movie!" -- was enough. Like, I'm sold. I don't even care if Gosling has that awful thinning hair/aviator shades/mustache combo he was sporting in Blue Valentine, I will watch the crap out of Only God Forgives and I will pay FULL PRICE PLUS BABYSITTER.

I wasn't going to need a lot of convincing about the merit of this movie, is what I'm saying. But now that I've seen Ryan Gosling's smoking-hot badass self in the just-released trailer? Dude. DUDE. July 19th cannot come soon enough.

Here's a synopsis of the Only God Forgives storyline:

Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian [Ryan Gosling] killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand. Julian’s mother Jenna [played by Oscar-nominee Kristin Scott Thomas] – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’. Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release… but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.

Okay, this is all sounding very good, but let's just go ahead and take a look at the trailer, shall we? (Note that this is a red band preview, and it's as dark and brutal as you might guess. Not kid-friendly, in other words.)

Damn, right? I mean, not to objectify Ryan Gosling, who consistently turns in amazing performances that have nothing to do with his physical appeal, but let me just get this out of the way: SCARY MOSTLY-SILENT RYAN GOSLING IS THE HOTTEST RYAN GOSLING OF ALL.

And speaking of not speaking, that marked lack of dialogue combined with a stylized fever-dream feeling should seem pretty familiar to Drive fans. Director Refn has compared Only God Forgives to his first collaboration with Gosling:

This one is very much a continuation of that language. It's based on real emotions, but set in a heightened reality. It's a fairy tale.

I love a trailer that gives you just enough without spilling the entire story. Here we first get a hint at Julian's darkness when his mother says this about him: "When I was pregnant with you, it was strange. You were different."

A line which is followed almost immediately by a shot of Gosling dragging a guy down a hallway by the roof of his mouth. Ah. Different. Yes.

The only dialogue from Gosling in this preview comes at the end, when he approaches the Angel of Vengeance and asks, "Wanna fight?" We don't know for sure what the outcome of that encounter will be, but based on the poster art, I think we can make a fairly educated guess:

In conclusion, everything about this movie is appealing to me, from the moody tension to the scenes of violence juxtaposed with a synth-infused soundtrack to the Ryan Gosling. It's set to be released in the U.S. on July 19, and I can't wait.

What do you think of the trailer for Only God Forgives?
