Johnny Depp's 'Lone Ranger' Just Got Even More Freaking Awesome

Unfortunately for us Johnny Depp fans, we have to wait until next May to watch the much-anticipated Disney reboot The Lone Ranger. I say "unfortunately" because this seems to be turning into one of those buzzy movies where every few weeks we get another tidbit of information about the film until we're all worked up into a white-hot lather and HEY STUDIOS JUST SELL ME THE GODDAMNED TICKET ALREADY INSTEAD OF SHOVING MY FACE IN YOUR MARKETING LIKE I'M A BAD DOG AND YOU'RE A PEE-SOAKED CARPET.

Uh, sorry. Apparently I still have some residual Hunger Games irritation.

Anyway, the latest Lone Ranger-related intrigue is related to its soundtrack, which seems like it is going to kick serious Old West ass. Picture, if you will: the William Tell Overture ... composed and performed by the garage rock god himself, Jack White.

I'm not sure if Jack White was chosen for this project because someone at Disney is a total flipping genius or if it's because he bears more than a passing resemblance to Johnny Depp, but however this came to be, I am a big fan of the idea. If I wasn't already on board due to 1) the presence of Johnny Depp, 2) the fact that Depp seems to be throwing himself into this project the way he did with Pirates of the Caribbean, and 3) I mentioned the part about Johnny Depp, right? — well, I would be now. White's signature crunchy, pedalboard-driven guitar style seems like the perfect accompaniment for what is sounding like a truly quirky-awesome Western.

Curse you, Disney. Here I am slobbering over the film and it doesn't come out for a year.

White has dabbled in soundtracks before, having sung several traditional tunes for Cold Mountain, and he also cowrote and performed the song "Another Way to Die" with Alicia Keys for the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. This will be his first feature film scoring project, though, and I'm guessing it won't be his last. Scoring films that star Johnny Depp seems to be a hot career move, after all ... ever heard of a guy named Danny Elfman?

Are you excited that Jack White is doing the Lone Ranger score?
