'Hunger Games' Reviews Say Movie Lives Up to the Hype (VIDEO)

Hunger Games

The Hunger Games hits theaters nationwide today, which means tonight and all weekend an overwhelming and unsettling amount of crazy fans will be mobbing movie theaters. Needless to say, this premiere is going to be HUGE. You've got to be living under a rock to not know about Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and this best-selling novel that has millions of readers hooked.

The post-apocalyptic story, directed by Gary Ross, The Hunger Games follows Katniss Everdeen as she is forced to compete against other kid and teen "tributes" in nationally televised fight-to-the-death "games" where only one competitor can survive.

I'll admit, I'm intrigued. But, will the movie live up to all the hype? What do the critics have to say? Check out The Hunger Games movie reviews, here:

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone:

Hunger Games radiates a hot, jumpy energy that's irresistible. It has epic spectacle, yearning romance, suspense that won't quit and a shining star in Jennifer Lawrence, who gives us a female warrior worth cheering. That's more than you can say for the castration job that the suits did on Stephenie Meyer's Twilight franchise.

Kyle Smith, New York Post:

This cracking adventure of the future keeps things moving for 2 ¼ hours and marks a refreshing turn, for a blockbuster, to the human and away from superpowers: Nobody (at least among the protagonists) can do anything magical, and the action scenes (all but one of which are superbly done) are intense and intimate.

Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times:

Lawrence is the key factor in making Hunger Games an involving popular entertainment with strong narrative drive that holds our attention by sticking as close to the book's outline as it can manage.

And our very own Adriana Velez attended a sneak peek screening:

This is on-the-edge-of-your-seat, forget your popcorn, pure movie bliss. I was completely swept in and went full white knuckle -- even though I totally knew what was going to happen because I'd read the book!

Wow! This sounds good to me. After all the comparisons, it looks like The Hunger Games really does have the potential to match, if not surpass, the Twilight phenomenon, and that's saying something.
