'J. Edgar' Reviews Kick Off Leonardo DiCaprio Oscar Buzz (VIDEO)

j. edgar leonardo dicaprioLeonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar HooverFrom the first time I watched the trailer for J. Edgar, which opens in theaters today, I knew it was going to be a must-see. Looking at the photo (left), you hardly recognize Leonardo DiCaprio, right? I heard somewhere that it took crews more than six hours to transform DiCaprio with makeup into a spot-on aging version J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Directed by the legendary Clint Eastwood, the film follows the public and private life of Hoover, one of the most powerful figures of the 20th century. Throw Armie Hammer (The Social Network), Naomi Watts, and Josh Lucas into the mix, and the movie seems to have all of the potential to make a big splash at the box office. See what the critics have to say in their J. Edgar reviews:

Lou Lumenick, New York Post:

DiCaprio may well receive a Best Actor Oscar for his tour de force as the conflicted FBI director -- greatly abetted by Hammer (who played the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network) in his first major role as the flamboyant but frustrated Tolson.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times:

As a period biopic, J. Edgar is masterful. Few films span seven decades this comfortably. The sets, the props, the clothes, and details, look effortlessly right.

David Denby, The New Yorker:

J. Edgar represents another remarkable turn in Clint Eastwood’s career.

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone:

Despite being buried in layers of (often too obvious) prosthetic latex, DiCaprio is a roaring wonder in the role ... Even when the film trips on its tall ambitions, you can't shake it off.

Manohla Dargis, The New York Times:

Mr. Eastwood doesn’t just shift between Hoover’s past and present, his intimate life and popular persona, he also puts them into dialectic play, showing repeatedly how each informed the other.

If my adoration for DiCaprio isn't enough to get me to the theater this weekend, then my schoolgirl crush on Armie Hammer should the trick. Still unsure if the movie is your speed? Watch the J. Edgar trailer below:
