'Footloose' Reviews Say Fans of the Original Will Approve

julianne hough kenny wormaid footlooseWhen I first heard that there was going to be a remake of Footloose, the iconic 1984 film where the Reverend of a town prohibits dancing and loud music after a deadly car accident that killed five teens, I was stupefied. Remaking such a classic movie is beyond daring, and then "updating" it by mixing in some street-style dance and hip-hop? It just doesn't seem natural.

Then I saw the updated cast, featuring Kenny Wormaid as Ren and his gorgeous eyes, and Julianne Hough as Ariel, and my skepticism dissipated, if only a bit. Really, how could it not? Do you see his muscles?! I swoon!

Directed by Craig Brewer, Footloose hits theaters today. Will the remake be as high energy and exciting as we hope, or an utter flop? See what the critics have to say in their Footloose reviews after the jump:

Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times:

The clothes are tighter, the bodies more toned, the dancing hotter, the characters more racially diverse, the sexual context more obvious. But underneath it all still beats the shameless heart of a by-the-numbers diversion that acts as if these particular dots have never been connected before.

Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News:

Despite adding some new songs and deftly updated choreography, Brewer stays so obsessively faithful to his inspiration, you can't help but compare ... Wormald lacks Bacon's charisma but Hough has an undeniable star quality.

Liza Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly:

Guardians of the '80s flame will approve of the production's sincere respect for the original; church still matters, and so do Ariel's red cowboy boots.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times:

This 2011 version is so similar -- sometimes song for song and line for line -- that I was wickedly tempted to reprint my 1984 review, word for word.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to whip out my dancing shoes and see a matinee with my girlfriends. Check out the Footloose trailer, here:
