Suri's momma, otherwise known as Katie Holmes, is back on the big screen this weekend in freaky-looking thriller film Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. If you're not too busy preparing for Hurricane Irene, then get the bejesus scared out of you by going to see this flick at the movies (or by simply listening to the chilling musical score). Fun!

This scary remake, produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Troy Nixey, hits theaters today. I'm just dying to see how my favorite Joey Potter does when things get creepy. See what the critics are saying in their Don't Be Afraid of the Dark reviews, after the jump:

Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly:

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is neither colorfully brutal nor especially fun. It's a plodding, derivative Gothic potboiler: The Shining meets Coraline, with a touch of Gremlins played (boringly) straight.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times:

This is a very good haunted house film. It milks our frustration deliciously.

Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel:

The new version of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is entirely too literal, but it still manages to be a literally hair-raising piece of modern-style old school Gothic horror.

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone:

The film never takes hold emotionally, despite strong work from Holmes and young Madison. With Del Toro's name in the credits, standard chills aren't enough.

Ian Buckwalter, NPR:

There's no denying that his latest monsters are imaginative and detailed creations, but the haunted house-style story is hampered by his desire to show them off.

It's been quite some time since I braved the theater to see a scary movie. I'm one of those hands over the eyes, squeamish kinds. But combine Guillermo's crazy street credit with Katie Holmes on screen, and I'd say it's about time for me to buck up and to change that.
