Evangeline Lilly Will Make 'Hobbit' as Annoying as 'Lost'

Say goodbye to "Freckles" and hello to "Pointy-ears." Director Peter Jackson has announced that Evangeline Lilly will be joining The Hobbit cast, and she'll be playing a Woodland Elf named Tauriel.

If you don't remember this character from the books, it's no surprise—apparently the role was written just for the film. "Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing!” wrote Jackson on his Facebook page. He also clarified that we won't be seeing any hot elf-on-elf action between her and Orlando Bloom: "No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas."

It's unsure if Lilly's elven character will be a warrior, a scout, a guard, or just some eye candy, but one thing is for certain: "Tauriel" will likely trend on the 2013 baby name lists.

Also, Lilly will probably bug the living crap out of me whenever she's onscreen.

I mean, assuming she plays an elf anything at all like how she played Kate from Lost, because holy hell, I couldn't stand her. Kate was annoying, boring, had no chemistry, seemed like a giant pain in the ass to be stuck on a mysterious island with, and generally sucked all the air out of the room every time the camera lovingly crawled up those ever-present low-rider jeans.

I can't even give her the benefit of the doubt when it comes to other roles, because the only other thing I can remember her from is
The Hurt Locker, which I loved in its entirety except for the scenes with Lilly's look-I-am-emoting-attractive-sadness Connie James character.

In less-irritating Hobbit news, Jackson also announced that Australian actor Barry Humphries—whose distinctive voice you may remember as Bruce the Shark in
Finding Nemo—will be portraying the Goblin King. With the latest casting, it sounds like the filming is about ready to go, with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey slated for release on December 14, 2012, and the second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, scheduled for December 13, 2013.
