'I Am Number Four' Review: At Least It Beats Bieber

I Am Number Four movieYou've seen the billboards and commercials everywhere, and I Am Number Four is finally here. Starring Alex Pettyfer and Dianna Agron from Glee, the movie is about a Clark Kent-type alien, number Four, aka John Smith, who discovers he has superpowers and is being hunted by evil-doers. The I Am Number Four reviews do us a favor by drawing up comparisons to several other movies and TV shows for teens -- if you're a fan of one or two, maybe you'll be a fan of this. So how does this movie stack up against Twilight, Spider-Man, Smallville, and other similar franchises?

Peter Paras, E! Online:

It's got a clever premise—hunky teen aliens who can only be killed in a sequential order—but Four spends too much time in Smallville mode [...].

Scott Bowles, USA Today:

The Mogadorians are serviceably villainous, though you've seen them in any fantasy film. That, ultimately, is the movie's shortcoming. Four is so cobbled with bits of other sci-fi and comic-book movies, there's little to distinguish it. And that's not nearly enough to save a peach-fuzzed superhero.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times:

"I Am Number Four" is shameless and unnecessary. That's sad, when a movie casts aside all shame, demonstrates itself willing to rip off anything that might attract audiences, and nevertheless fails.

Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel:

[T]he subtext, that you shouldn’t waste your teen years on stupid risks because you’re needed “for a higher purpose,” makes this a franchise I won’t mind seeing progress to a second movie.

The reviews aren't spectacular, but they aren't all that bad either. Certainly, if you're looking for a bit of an escape, you could do worse. Let's face it, you don't go to a movie like I Am Number Four to get a fresh story you've never seen before. You go to see action, fighting sequences, and pretty people.

Or because you don't really feel like watching Justin Bieber: Never Say Never two weekends in a row.

Ok, let's be real, I probably won't be watching this one on the big screen, but I also won't be surprised if I Am Number Four is the #1 movie in this weekend's box office.

Are you excited to watch I Am Number Four this weekend?
