Kristen Stewart as Lois Lane -- Another Wallflower Role?

Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson Taylor LautnerDon't yell at me -- but I just have to say that I'm not overly impressed with Kristen Stewart and her acting abilities. Sure, I've enjoyed all the Twilight movies for what they are, and I liked her portrayal of Joan Jett in the Runaways okay. However, Kristen needs to take on much more diverse and challenging roles if she's ever going to win me over.

Unfortunately, the latest rumored upcoming roles for Kristen -- as Lois Lane in a new Superman movie or as Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsmen -- don't look like they are going to push her outside the Bella Swan box either. Whatever Stewart takes on post-Twilight is really going to set the stage for her future as a longstanding actress, and I'm not sure playing the girlfriend to another super-freak is the best way to make a lasting impression in Hollywood.

Kristen Stewart needs a breakout role if she's ever going to move past Twilight fame and into being a more serious actress -- rather than a teen icon (although for all the dough she's making on those films, why bother?). She needs a risky, outside-the-box role like the Hilary Swank Boys Don't Cry role or the Charlize Theron role in Monster. There's no telling if she could handle a role like that until she gives it a try. I'd like to see her agent nab her a character who shines in her complexity and whose storyline calls for some real emotional range in front of the camera.

After playing the girlfriend turned wife of a vampire for five movies followed by a Beatnik wife in the big screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, playing the #1 lady friend to seven tiny men or the fawning gal pal of the man of steel are not the kind of roles she needs to set herself apart, especially considering that that Lois Lane won't be an integral character in the new Superman film. She needs to be the star of her own show and demonstrate she can carry a movie on her own. If she can, then she might be around to stay in Hollywood.

Kristen Stewart's real-life personality appears to be pretty shy, subdued, and angsty. She seems to do just fine flying under the radar, as much as a Twilight star can, rather than stealing the spotlight. However, it seems that if she wants to make it as an actress for the long haul, she's going to have to do some stepping out -- and that means in terms of her role choices first and foremost. Get off the sidelines, Kristen. Show us what you got!

What do you think? Does Kristen Stewart need to take on a more challenging role? Or is she right where she should be?
