'The Green Hornet' Review: Not Enough Buzz for Your Buck

The Green HornetThe Green Hornet, which was supposed to be a summer hit, opens this weekend. Starring Seth Rogen, the movie is about a rich kid who decides to don a mask and fight crime. It's got movie magic written all over it, right? Well, the critics have seen it and they can't seem to agree if this is worth watching or not. Let's check out the reviews for The Green Hornet.

Luke Y. Thompson, E! Online:

Rogen may have lost weight for this role, but it hardly matters—he's still doing a more charming version of Butt-Head, aged twentysomething. You know by now if that works for you or not.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times:

"The Green Hornet" is an almost unendurable demonstration of a movie with nothing to be about.

Eek! That's not a great start, but it gets slightly better ...

Andrew O'Hehir, Salon:

Yes, once upon a time the Green Hornet was going to be Clooney and now it is Rogen. That really says it all, good and bad, and I can just stop here. [...] I'm pleased to report that the movie is entirely watchable and often pretty fun, in a mishmashed, patchy kind of way.

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone:

Despite the rumors and the graveyard January opening, The Green Hornet doesn't suck. But don't expect it to hang together either, what with the clashing tones and melting logic. Rogen doesn't make much of an action hero, but he plays his lack of superpowers for maximum fun.

Most of the reviews suggest that the film is entertaining, even if it doesn't actually have anything going for it. I don't know about you, but that's not what I spend money for at the movies. If the only thing going for a movie is that it's not as bad as expected, I'm waiting until it's on Netflix Instant Watch.

I'll also take a moment to point out that this 3D thing has gone too far. I realize that happened several movies ago, but Hollywood still hasn't gotten the memo, so I'm just going to keep saying it until it stops. A mediocre movie isn't suddenly better because it's in 3D. Stop it.

Are you going to watch The Green Hornet this weekend?
