Michelle Williams Breaks Silence on Heath Ledger's Death

It's been almost three years since Heath Ledger's tragic passing, and for the first time, Michelle Williams is talking about the loss of her ex-fiancee. She recently appeared on ABC's Nightline to promote her film Blue Valentine, but also opened up about about how she reacted after Ledger's death.

"In a strange way, I miss that year, because all those possibilities that existed then are gone," she said. "It didn't seem unlikely to me that he could walk through a door or could appear behind a bush. It was a year of very magical thinking, and in some ways I'm sad to be moving further and further away from it."

It's the first time Williams has spoken about the death of the father of her 5-year-old daughter, Matilda. Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment on January 22, 2008, at age 28 from what police determined was an accidental overdose of a number of prescription medications.

Williams also spoke about her struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss, saying, “I’ve found meanings around the circumstance, but the actual event itself still doesn’t ... I can’t find a meaning for it.

"I can find meanings in things and people and relationships that have sprung up and friendships that have strengthened. I can find a lot of meaning in that, but not in why.”

I can't begin to imagine what she's gone through, and I admire her for maintaining public silence on this topic until she was ready to discuss it. What she had to say about the strengthened bonds that have formed is lovely; maybe other people in difficult situations will be able to take some solace from those words.

She stars in Blue Valentine with Ryan Gosling, and the film will be released December 29. Do you plan to see it?
