Why Hollywood Hates Rooney Mara

rooney maraRooney Mara. Know her? Didn't think so. But you will. The sweet-faced actress has just been cast as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. She'll star opposite Daniel Craig.

Mara was apparently Fincher's first choice and beat out better known actresses who were gunning for the role: Ellen Page, Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart, and others. Natalie Portman for Pete's sake.

So what are Mara's acting creds? She's had less-than-supporting roles in such flicks as Nightmare on Elm Street and the oh-so-memorable Tanner Hall, and made a few minor appearances on TV.

Can't you just see the actresses who lost out now? They're all at the Ivy in Hollywood, claws out, bitching about the young unknown, ordering stuff "off" the menu -- and then not eating a thing. Mara probably still can't even get a rez there ... but she may soon have the last laugh.

The 25-year-old -- who will soon be seen in The Social Network, which co-stars Andrew Garfield -- joins the not so shabby company of other "unknowns" who made it big.

Sandra Bullock (Oscar-winning actress who earned $56 million last year)
Breakout role:
Annie in Speed
Starred opposite: Keanu Reeves
Won it over: Halle Berry

Renee Zellweger (Oscar-winning actress dating Bradley Cooper)
Breakout role: Dorothy in Jerry Maguire
Starred opposite: Tom Cruise
Won it over: Cameron Diaz

Katie Holmes (Tom Cruise's wife)
Breakout role: Kate Cruise
Starred opposite: Tom Cruise
Lost Won it over: Jennifer Garner

Amy Adams (Oscar-nominated actress)
Breakout role: Giselle in Enchanted
Starred opposite: Patrick Dempsey, James Mardsen
Won it over: Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, and hundreds of others

So let the losers be as catty as they want, Mara is in good company (Mrs. Cruise excluded) and we think she's well on her way to becoming the next best thing.
