Andrew Garfield Is Spider-Man: A British Tobey Maguire?

Tobey Maguire
, hot dad, is not going to slither into the Spider-Man costume anymore. (In my fantasies, he still might.) And this makes me sad. I actually watched the movies and enjoyed Peter Parker webbing his way around town, fighting crimes, and kissing Kirsten Dunst upside-down.

Now there's a new guy, Andrew Garfield, replacing him. But why? The director says they are taking the franchise in a new direction. Perhaps it's because Maguire is 34 and Garfield is 27? Perhaps it's just time to put a new unexpected heartthrob in that tight red suit?

Let's get to know Andrew, shall we?

He's British. Though he was born in California and moved to England when he was three.

He's fancy. He did theatre (that's how they spell it over there -- say it with an accent) and he won awards for it.

And he's rubbed elbows with some hotshots. He was in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell, and the late Heath Ledger.

On Ledger, Garfield says:

"We wanted to challenge each other, and Heath was so strong," Garfield told Entertainment Weekly. "He made me fight harder than I ever had, and I'm so thankful to him for it."

So he's worked with some of the best, comes with an impressive resume, and is dashingly handsome (I love his eyebrows). Could I find it in my heart to accept him as Tobey Maguire's replacement? Maybe. I'll have to wait to see for myself in Spider-Man 4 in theaters July 3 -- in 2012! -- and in 3D.

What do you think of Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man?
