Many of us know what it's like to go through a series of hardships and feel like there's no way out. But, every once in a while there's someone who comes along and helps us to remember just how good people can be. A kind gesture has the ability to lift our spirits just when we need it most. That's exactly what happened to writer Therra Jaramillo

  • Therra recently shared on Facebook that after facing a financial hardship, she was really struggling to get by.

In her viral post, Therra explains that her water heater needed to be replaced, costing about $2,000, and she was waiting for an overdue freelance check to come in. She said altogether she had taken a financial hit of about $4,000. This caused Therra to struggle caring for not only herself, but four rescued dogs, two rescued cats, an elderly, blind chicken, and her disabled brother.

In addition to her recent financial struggles, Therra had also faced a lot of loss. A few years ago, her husband John Jaramillo, died from brain cancer. She was also a survivor of Hurricane Katrina and had lost her mother as a result of that tragedy.

  • Things got so difficult for Therra that she said she "almost gave up completely" and had "rarely felt so alone."

    Therra wrote:

"There is no one else to do it. It's all on me. I was too embarrassed to say out loud I was having financial difficulty but it was a solid problem. I was making rice for me and the dogs to eat. I was losing sleep. I was crying daily. I rationed gas in my car. I felt like sh*t. Like a loser. It was breaking me in pieces.
I was scared of the future, immediate and long term. If I can’t take care of myself, I reasoned, I am majestically f*cked. I crashed under the pressure and it got r-r-r-rough. I almost gave up completely and have rarely felt so alone."
  • Luckily, Therra has some great friends because someone (who she calls Miracle Mary) sent her a $250 Whole Foods gift card to get her back on her feet.

"I went to a Whole Foods across town with a dream of hummus and fresh food," she wrote. "Real dog food for the pups. Maybe a pizza with roasted exotic toppings. Holy sh*t, Facebookies I wanted to eat like a piranha dropped into a pool party in Vegas."

While in line,  the food for her pets accidentally ended up in with the stuff of the guy ahead of her on the conveyer belt. When she tried to claim her groceries, the guy in front of her said, “I might as well get it.”

  • Obviously, Therra was shocked by the kind gesture, but wait ... it gets so much better!

She had accidentally gone over her gift card limit and while she was trying to have the cashier put some things back the kind stranger stopped her. "I said I got this," he said. He paid for all of her groceries, which cost about $375. Therra shared:

"I asked his name. 'Chris,' he said.

We shook hands. Then I hugged him, shedding tears on the tattoo on his shoulder. I thanked him but I was so stunned that even as we made small talk (he asked me about my four dogs) I tripped over my words, all the while thinking, 'I'm talking to an angel. Should I tell him? Should I tell him he's an angel?'

'Who ARE you?' I asked at one point, in true wonder.

    'Just a guy,' he said.

No. Not 'just a guy.' I thought. No.

After he paid my for ALL my stuff ($375 total) he said, 'They'll make sure you get all this out to your car, okay? Do you need any help?'

'No,' I said, tears still streaming down my face, 'But I do need to thank you again.'

'You’re sweet,' he said softly, looking at me with real kindness in his eyes, 'You’re nice to rescue dogs.'

'I’m lucky,' I said, 'You, my friend, are sweet. You’re special. I want to be like you.' We hugged again."

  • But it wasn't an angel exactly, it was Grammy-winning rapper and actor Ludacris -- and everyone knew it but her!

After he left, the cashier informed Therra who he was. “WHAT," she screamed.

    She shared on Facebook:

"Ludacris. This guy is awesome run amok. You know why? He was just doing something kind for a disheveled, harried stranger. Showing the love in his soul. Shining a light in the world. But there's something else.

What Ludacris had no way of knowing is that I can't really afford to shop at Whole Foods. Not much, anyway. I was there because Miracle Mary gave me a gift card and knew I'd been shouldering a very rough time as of late."

  • It's just SO GOOD!

So next time you are facing a hardship, just remember that people like Ludacris do exist. And next time someone you know is going through a rough time, maybe you will have the chance to be more like this Whole Foods angel.

Bottom line: We love you, Luda!
