Remember 300 Sandwiches Lady -- Stephanie Smith, whose boyfriend said he'd propose to her if she made him 300 sandwiches? I think we'd all forgotten about her around Sandwich Number 10 or so. But she kept at it, and all those sandwiches paid off. Eric Schulte proposed to Smith in Barbados next to a heart made of flower petals, as you do. And the best part? He surprised her by proposing at Sandwich Number 257. Plot twist! She didn't have to make all 300 sandwiches after all ... except that she actually will have to make all 300 sandwiches and then some because now Mr. 300 Sandwiches is hers for life. And we all know what he likes most of all.
Sandwiches, of course! What were you thinking about?!?
Anyway, this is a love story that divided people. Some were outraged: Bartering sandwiches for an engagement ring? What is this, the middle ages? What kind of asshole requires his girlfriend to pass a test of culinary endurance before he'll agree to marry her? If he really loved her, he'd just up and ask her to marry him instead of making her cook for him, the barbarian!
But let's get back to the heart of what he was saying when he first said (flippantly, I think), "Honey, you're 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring." That kind of sounds like an unofficial proposal right there to me. A guy isn't going to joke around like that, especially to a writer, unless he's serious about following through.
This is the same guy who equates sandwiches with love. "You women read all these magazines to get advice on how to keep a man, and it’s so easy,” Schulte said back in September. “We’re not complex. Just do something nice for us. Like make a sandwich." That's what this was all about. Not the food, but the slow accumulation of many kind acts.
Smith's own mother told her, “Relationships are a marathon, not a sprint. Take it one sandwich at a time.” She's right. That's how relationships are built. And I like to think that while Stephanie was making all those sandwiches, her boyfriend was gifting her with many little acts of kindness as well.
For these two, and for all happy couples, it's not about the ring. It's about what you're building together, sandwich by sandwich. (Metaphorically speaking.) "Words cannot express how extraordinarily happy I am," Stephanie writes in her blog, Three Hundred Sandwiches. "Not because I have an engagement ring, but because I’m going to spend the rest of my life having ridiculously amazing adventures with my soul mate." Daww, are you melting right now?
How did you feel about Stephanie's quest to make 300 sandwiches for a proposal?
