Casper Smart, the luckiest backup dancer since Kevin Federline, gave an interview to Good Morning America in which he said that it was not "love at first sight" with girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. While I'd argue that he has to say that because they met while J. Lo was still married, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and go along with this not-falling-right-away thing.
If there's anything I believe in more than a well-thought out public comment on the state of your relationship, it's that love at first sight doesn't really exist.
Totally believe in attraction at first sight and lust at first sight, but love? Not so much. How can you love someone you hardly know? I mean, I realize The Bachelor series is based on that concept, but in real life, it doesn't work that way. There are these things called personalities that get in the way, and sometimes they don't rear their potentially scary heads until way after you first meet.
J. Lo herself agress, if you're to believe the lyrics in her 1999 breakout hit, "If You Had My Love." She sang, You say you want my love, and you got to have it all. But first there are some things you need to know. If you wanna live with all I have to give, I need to feel true love or it's got to end, yeah.
J. Lo knows that it takes time and work to make love work and that it's not as simple as Oh that guy in the back is so cute! Let's be together forever!
Who knows, maybe these two relationship scholars will make it work. They seem to realize that there's nothing necessarily effortless about falling in love and making it last, and that might be half the battle.
Well that, and his abs don't hurt.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
