Just when you thought you knew everything about the romance between everyone's favorite couple, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, here comes something I bet you didn't quite know about them. Robsten, as you did know, first met during auditions for the original Twilight film. The film's director, Catherine Hardwicke, told Elle magazine that the two read a scene together and -- surprise! -- had some very strong chemistry with each other. Well, of course, they did. They were reading from a scene that took place in biology class. Dishes Hardwicke in Elle's June issue with Kristen Stewart as cover girl:
I felt the sparks. I could see the attraction. Kristen was very vocal - she knew she had the strongest connection with Rob.
Ooh, this is good. But it gets so much better, folks. Here's the bit you may not have known.
At the time of the audition, Rob was 21 and Kristen was ... gulp ... 17! Which made her what is delicately known in some circles as "jail bait." Hardwicke decided that their chemistry was so explosive that she better warn Rob that there is such a thing called ... gulp ... statutory rape. "She's underage, don't even think about it! It's a law in our country," Hardwicke says she warned Rob.
And, of course, that must have worked because we know Rob and Kristen would have nevah hooked up or even thought about it whilst Kristen was short of being legal. Right? Right.
Remember how secretive everything was in the beginning with those two? How woo-woo, are-they-or-aren't they? This was definitely NOT because Kristen was underage. Definitely not.
Besides, I took it upon myself to look up the statutory rape laws in Oregon, where the movie was filmed. Guess what? The age of consent is 16. Whew! Rob, you're in the clear. Not that anything happened, of course. The only crime you committed, dahling, was being too sex-ay!
But, seriously, folks. What to do when you're just a wee bit older than your partner? And your partner is just a wee bit underage? Hey, don't look at me. I wouldn't take any chances. Hence the handy "Statutory Rape Laws by State" guide conveniently found online. A roll in the hay is not worth years in the clink.
Have you ever found yourself dating someone just a wee bit on the illegal side?

'I was the illegal one dating my 22 year old boss at the age of 16. Only a couple people new about it. My parents certainly didn't. We were together for over a year.
id go to the pin to roll in some hay with robert...just saying...lol
Ponychaser's right, we need to make sure our kids know about the statutory rape laws when they are teenagers. My husband's best friend has a cousin who was dating a girl only a couple years younger than him. He turned 18 and her parent's nailed him for statutory rape, even though they had been dating for awhile. He STILL has the stigma of being a sex offender and people treat him like a rapist or child molester and all he was, was a kid who loved a girl younger than him. I don't think there was more than a couple years age difference either. So, yeah, make sure your teenager knows the laws, it could save them a lot of grief down the road.
It is a delicate matter, but it is very important to inform our kids, specially when they have friend./romances that are a bit behind them in age. Although some parenta may have no qualms letting a 16 year old date a 17 year old, the moment something happens, like being caught making out, some parents will just wait for the right moment to ruin kids lives by accusing them of statuory rape. Scary stuff.
17 is actually legal in the UK and Patterson is British so he probably didn't think much about her age at the time they hooked up. I also don't think 17 & 21 is a big deal.
when i started dating my fiance he was 29, and i was 18. two weeks later he turned 30...my daddy wasn't too happy about it, but they get along great now!
