Just when you thought you knew everything about the romance between everyone's favorite couple, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, here comes something I bet you didn't quite know about them. Robsten, as you did know, first met during auditions for the original Twilight film. The film's director, Catherine Hardwicke, told Elle magazine that the two read a scene together and -- surprise! -- had some very strong chemistry with each other. Well, of course, they did. They were reading from a scene that took place in biology class. Dishes Hardwicke in Elle's June issue with Kristen Stewart as cover girl:
I felt the sparks. I could see the attraction. Kristen was very vocal - she knew she had the strongest connection with Rob.
Ooh, this is good. But it gets so much better, folks. Here's the bit you may not have known.
At the time of the audition, Rob was 21 and Kristen was ... gulp ... 17! Which made her what is delicately known in some circles as "jail bait." Hardwicke decided that their chemistry was so explosive that she better warn Rob that there is such a thing called ... gulp ... statutory rape. "She's underage, don't even think about it! It's a law in our country," Hardwicke says she warned Rob.
And, of course, that must have worked because we know Rob and Kristen would have nevah hooked up or even thought about it whilst Kristen was short of being legal. Right? Right.
Remember how secretive everything was in the beginning with those two? How woo-woo, are-they-or-aren't they? This was definitely NOT because Kristen was underage. Definitely not.
Besides, I took it upon myself to look up the statutory rape laws in Oregon, where the movie was filmed. Guess what? The age of consent is 16. Whew! Rob, you're in the clear. Not that anything happened, of course. The only crime you committed, dahling, was being too sex-ay!
But, seriously, folks. What to do when you're just a wee bit older than your partner? And your partner is just a wee bit underage? Hey, don't look at me. I wouldn't take any chances. Hence the handy "Statutory Rape Laws by State" guide conveniently found online. A roll in the hay is not worth years in the clink.
Have you ever found yourself dating someone just a wee bit on the illegal side?

Since dh and I got together as teenagers and he is two years older than me, at some point in our relationship he was legally an adult and I was not. It certainly doens't make our relationship nonconsensual in any way at that point in time, however. I believe in most places statutory rape laws take those kind of situations into account in how they phrase the law.
FYI- the age of consent in Oregon being 16 only applies if the older person is less than 3 years older.
Dating doesn't mean they were having sex.
I find this 1 million times less disturbing than Courtney Stodden and her grandfather husband.
Freela... often "they" do NOT take any extenuating circumstances into consideration when they write - or enforce - laws. There are tons of guys on the Sexual Offenders List who were in this exact situation, and were confronted by the angry parent of a young lady who consented. It didn't matter. The young men were labeled "sexual offenders", and bear that stigma for LIFE.
If your son is dating, hammer it into his head that the age thing is nothing to mess around with. I know I will, when mine's old enough.
I don't think that her age is any of my business. If we parents would pay more attention to our own children and their boyfriends than the stars that HAVE mom's that take care of this business, then we would all have much happier lives.. I believe their parents are more than capable of taking care of this matter.. They don't need a lot of NOSY people judging their kids.. I know I wouldn'!
