Tonight on the finale of American Idol, there was a moment almost bigger than the announcement of the winner. After showing alums Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo in the audience, Ryan Seacrest called the couple up onto stage. First there was a bit of small talk, then the lights were dimmed, and Ace said he had a question to ask her.

It was pretty obvious what was happening, but still, hearts were pounding, and she looked nervous. Ace started making a beautiful case as to why they were meant to be together. "We have conquered Broadway together, we have created new music together, we have an amazing group of people around us and ..."

And then he kind of ruined the whole thing.

He continued: "With the help of David Webb jewelry, I have a way to make this fun last forever. You ready?"

Say what?!

Yes, he seriously put a product placement advertisement in the middle of his proposal. I replayed it many times to make sure I wasn't just hearing things, but that's exactly what he did. It's bad enough they were probably paid by American Idol in some form or fashion to share their big moment in this way, but to mar the moment like that is just sad and tacky.

Fortunately, that was the only advertisement, and he then got down on one knee and went on with a sweet proposal.

I love you to death, you're my best friend. I want to make this last forever and I would do anything in my power to have the most imaginable and amazing life together, if you will have me. Diana Nicole DeGarmo, will you marry me?

Hopefully the little promo didn't ruin things for DeGarmo. It didn't appear to, and she seemed to give her own little plug for the jeweler. "Wow, babe, you picked a good one!" she said looking at the ring.

I suppose if they're okay with pimping out their proposal, that's all that matters, but it sure seems desperate to me. In any case, congrats to the couple. May they make beautiful music together forever. And when sponsors start lining up, maybe there will be opportunities in their wedding vows.
