10 Awesome Date Ideas That Won't Make You Go Broke

8

Most of us have been hit by the current economic downturn (and if you haven't, *high five*), which means that finding new and more inexpensive ways to do things is imperative for everything from grocery shopping to dining out to dates.

That leaves a lot of us who aren't as creative (raises hand) to try and figure out new ways to go on dates, given that the 800 million dollar steak dinner is probably not exactly in our budget anymore. But there's no reason a date can't be as awesome (or more so) even if our wallets are lighter.

Here are 10 awesome and inexpensive date ideas.

1. Pack a picnic. Sure, it's not an 8-course meal at the best steakhouse in the city, but there's something really special about sitting outside and sharing a bucket of chicken on a blanket with that special someone.

2. Go ice skating. It's winter and cold in most of the country right now, and a picnic may not be an option at the moment. Instead, pack a thermos of hot chocolate and hit the rink.

3. Go sledding. If you're too klutzy to manage ice skating (like me!) sledding can be equally fun and romantic. Just be sure to pack that thermos of hot chocolate!

4. Take a winery tour. There's nothing like getting tipsy for little or no money while bonding over the tastes of various local wines.

5. Hit the flea market. There's a lot of fun to be had sorting through the treasures (and garbage!) that people sell at the flea market. It's a great place to bond.

6. Go to the carnival. Yeah, I know, you're not 12 anymore, but riding that Ferris Wheel or Tilt-A-Whirl can bring you back to your childhood.

7. Movie night. Going to the movies has become increasingly expensive. So why not pop some popcorn and curl up on the couch for a movie marathon?

8. Hit up a local concert. Most cities have local bands that play at the odd dive bar or coffee shop. There's tons of great energy there.

9. Catch some coffee. There's nothing more romantic than curling up together at one of those coffee shops, people watching, while sharing a couple of cups of coffee.

10. Cook a romantic meal ... together. Bonding in the kitchen can be loads of fun -- and an inexpensive way to have an amazing dinner.

What are YOUR ideas for a cheap, awesome date?

We love parks, and hiking out with a lunch in a backpack, eating and hiking back out :) Oh, and we do  alot of horse back dates, again, packing a meal in the saddlebags and off we go! We also do truck dates, where we pick a road we've never been down, hit a convience store for snacks, fill the gas tank and go exploring!

As a side note, some of our most romantic"dates" are little unplanned things, like when I have a few extra kids and my own, but need to grocery shop, and SO offers to meet me at the store on his way home to help me shop with five kids. Seeing him puts me in a good mood again, and the help is greatly appreciated! Suddenly the horrific shopping trip w lost kids is adverted :P He gets how many bonus points that scores him later that evening when the lil ones are gone home or down for the night! Or when I've had a rough day, so he steps in a takes over the cooking for me, no, not a planned romantic cooking together, but a great way to end my day cooking with my sweety! I love that!

California is awesome. There are so many places to go, things to do that are free! Free! Free!
I pack a cooler with frozen water bottles in the trunk (ice is messy, this way the ice melts in the bottle while keeping other drinks cold), a duffle bag with change of clothes for swimming and emergencies(like potty accidents) and a picnic basket and hit the road with the family for a nice weekend scenic drive along Pacific Coast Highway. If you have never driven along that road from southern cali to northern cali or northern cali to southern cali, it is a must do. Some of the views are breath- takingly beautiful! And disposable cameras for the kiddies brings out some very interesting pictures (Baby, why are you taking a picture of mommy's butt?)

There's Balboa, Solvang, Palm Springs, Newport Beach, The Santa Monica Pier, Shoreline Village, just to name a few.

Also in LA or Hollywood area you can go on the TV website and reserve tickets to tapings of shows.

Museums also have free days or discount days! I just check the websites for info before I go.

Sometimes though, for a cheap date. The hubby and I would just go park the car up the hill and watch the sunset. After dark, we'd make out in the car. HAHA just kidding. We haven't made out in the car in a long long time. That was just wishful thinking. ;)

I'm still trying to figure out how a carnival is inexpensive. Maybe we have the wrong ones in the South but the last time I took my DD to one, I spent a ridiculous amount of money for not so much fun. She actually liked seeing the fair animals better. At least they weren't $5 for a lemonade.

No snow here so cross out sledding and ice skating. carnivals ARE exspensive! And we don't drink(winery idea)

With that said, we love cooking together and piC nics too. Same with goibg to the park or beach

Oh come on you guys, a date to a flea market would be awesome! At least it's not the same old, same old. It's not what you do together, its that you do it together.
