When it comes to lubrication, it's time to get personal -- really personal. Being wet is one of the most important elements of sex, right? You have to be to enjoy it! But it’s something we often only think about during dry spells of desperation and don't always have some lube handy. Remember, dryness down there doesn't always mean something is wrong (with you or your partner). Hormones can be a bitch.
So even if your vagina feels more Niagara Falls than the dusty ole Grand Canyon, we could all benefit from adding some slickness. Sex lube can be a girl’s go-to-guide for the best! sex! ever! You can keep it in the nightstand by the bed, or somewhere else safe and accessible, like in the kitchen. Yep! Let's dive in and let me help you choose the best lube for you!
Speaking of the kitchen, sex lubes can be can be natural, like grape seed or olive oil, but only if we’re not using other forms of barrier protection with our partners. Convenient for some kitchen countertop nookie.
But for those of you who are trying to get pregnant, keep in mind that lube can actually act as a barrier to conception, with the exception of one or two lubes on the market, like Preseed. So use that one when making a baby.
There are two types of latex friendly lubes on the market, water-based and silicone lubes, great for use with condoms. Water-based lubes are more available, less expensive, wash out of the body faster, and come in flavors and with warming/cooling options. Sexy! Silicone lubes are waterproof (making them great for bath or shower play), wash off with soap and water, and last a heck-of-a-lot-longer. Hello! But they cost more.
If you want your orgasms to be organic, know that no manufactured lube is 100 percent organic, as it would expire too quickly. However, there are companies who make natural lubes. These include Aloe Cadabra, Sliquid, and Good Clean Love. And if you’re feeling overly ambitious, you can boil your own personal lube in twenty minutes using flax seeds and water. Watch Grist TV's DIY Love Juice video to find out more.
Let’s also take a moment to thank Mother Nature for providing us with spit and natural vaginal lubrication though, even if they don’t always show up when we need them, too.
I’d love to hear from all of you. What’s your favorite type of lube? Have you tried making your own?
