No Cure for Common Cold – Or Whiny Men

Love & Sex 32

cold medicineAttention everyone! I've got breaking news! There is no cure for the common cold.  No, really, there is absolutely 100% no cure. Want some more grand news? Nothing really works to get rid of a cold or shorten the duration of it.

You and I may have know this in some realm of out subconscious, but we still head to the Walgreen's to grab something, anything to try to ease our symptoms. The over-the-counter cold and cough meds, echinacea, Vitamin C, tea, garlic, zinc lozenges, well, really none of them do anything. They kinda do diddly-squat. Together, we spend $4.2 billion a year on diddly-squat.

Even Nana's chicken soup just tastes good -- no real proof it cures the sniffles. Sure, using some of these could make you think you feel better, but really the only thing that helps get over a cold is time.

You realize what this means, don't you? If there's no cure for the common cold, that means there's no cure for the man cold.

I was holding out hope. Not because of my good-natured spirit. Not like on some beauty pageant where I'm hoping for world peace and a cure to the common cold. My inner Mother Teresa is nowhere to be seen.

I just hate dealing with my sick husband. He sniffles and coughs. He whines. He hacks weird colored icky things into the sink and leaves his tissues everywhere. He whines some more. He takes 5 baths a day to "sweat it out" and some how forgets the ability to do basically do anything except watch Mike & Mike reruns on his laptop. He whines some more  ... and then mopes.

I don't like to see him sick, but, hel-lo, he just has a friggin' cold.

Of course, I would have a heart if he was really sick.  But he doesn't. He has some boogies and his head hurts. I say suck it up. When I get a cold, I still manage to get our daughter to school, to remember pack sneakers for soccer class, to buy the gift for the 19th birthday party this month we have to go to on the weekend, to order th groceries, to send his mom flowers for her birthday.

Why is it that my husband is a such sucky sick person? I blame DNA. I find solace when talking to other women, that I am not alone. That it is somehow part of the male gene, to be wonderful in so many ways, yet the worst patients ever.

Alas, the man cold is here to stay. There is no cure. Sadness.

Is your husband worse than your kids when he has the sniffles?

My husband is off the charts worse than the kids when sick.. When he coughs he looks like he is having a seizure.. I kid you not.. Falls over in exhaustion right after... God forbid ANYBODY else in the household(or neighbor/state)get sick and he hear about it.. He will have the SAME symptoms(doesn't matter if it's a rare disease or common cold)within 24hrs of hearing about it...

Most wives are motherly when their husbands get sick.. Me...I want nothing more than to crawl under a rock with a LARGE bottle of rum until he is miraculously better again!

My husband... I don't know where to start. If it's not a terrible, "excrutiating" pain in his tummy that miraculously goes away when one of his buddies wants to hang out, it's his hypochondriac self complaining about every little joint and muscle that twitches.

Granted, once or twice it's been real. But it's gotten to where I just roll my eyes and fade out when he starts complaining about what hurts this week and how he is convinced it's some obscure disease he looked up on the internet.

I love the man, but give me a break! Like you said, when I'm sick I manage to get through my day JUST FINE. Aren't they supposed to be the stronger sex? I don't want to baby my husband every day over a wittle tummy ache.

I'm not your mommy, I'm your wife! Unless you're going to drop everything to baby me when I feel under the weather, get up and suck it up!

HaHaHa-In our house I admit it's role reversal-Colds always hit me worse-and maybe part of the "whine" on my end stems from all the years I lived on my own, sucked it up and had no one to "whine" to (LOLOLOLOL)

Granted-I whine but I still cook and clean up-when he's sick,he may not whine but he surely isn't up and about as I am...

My husband, I'm very grateful to say, is such a trooper. He goes to work no matter how sick he is. He gets horrible, vomit inducing migraines and still pushes through until he absolutely needs to go lie down and get some quiet and darkness until his head lets up. The RARE times when he is so sick he has to stay in bed and needs a little tending to I have no problem giving him that.

I hate to admit it but I am whinier when I get a cold than my husband is when he gets one.  He sucks it up when he is sick.  I hit the couch and do the very minimum it takes to keep the household running.

I'm with Heather on this one. I got lucky with a boyfriend who doesn't complain much when he's sick. Now, when I'm ill, I turn into a real butthead and he never complains.

I'm so lucky that my husband almost never gets sick. He has a super strong immune system. Call me old fashioned, but I actually like taking care of him when he does get sick. Probably because I have to do it so rarely.

And he always repays the favor. In fact, he takes care of me way more than I do him. I have a condition that causes me to be in pain a lot of the time, so when I'm having one of my "bad days" he is there in a second to make sure I have everything I need, cooks me food, and takes care of  our son.

But now we are living in different cities. This makes me miss him really bad now :(

Mine is pretty good with colds, but back pain? Pfft. I have chronic back pain but I've learned to adjust, not complain too much...he hurt his back this week and it has been a constant struggle. He usually makes a little bit of fun of me when I'm hobbling around but giggle at his funny old man shuffle? Oh heaven's no! And the pouts! Wow. Just...wow.
