Reese WitherspoonWant to know what one of the main reasons behind the celebrity divorce epidemic may be? It’s got nothing to do with infidelity. And nothing to do with couples growing apart. It has everything to do with the fact that the women earn more money than the men.
Some men feel threatened being with a woman who has more professional success and a bigger bank account than them. It can make a man feel like less of, well, a man.
Look at Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman. She’s won four Grammy Awards and sold millions of albums, just had a new movie, Burlesque, come out and has received countless other accolades. She brings in the big bucks. And Jordan? He’s always referred to as a "music executive." No more, no less. What does that even mean?
That he's taking a backseat to his wife.
What about Courteney Cox and David Arquette? Since meeting in 1996 during the filming of the first Scream, Courteney has definitely surpassed her husband in the money-earning category. She was Monica Geller for ten seasons of Friends, had the lead in the television series Dirt, and is now the lead on the aptly named Cougartown.
And husband David?
He's currently a partner with Courteney in their production company Coquette. Sure, he's been in each of the three Scream movies and is in the fourth installment premiering in the Spring of 2011. But it's obvious who makes the money in that family.
And lastly, how about Reese Witherspoon and her ex Ryan Philippe? In 2005, the year before the two filed for divorce, Reese won an Oscar for her role as June Carter Cash in the acclaimed film Walk the Line. The two got married in 1999, a year before the success of Legally Blonde, which was followed by Legally Blonde 2, Sweet Home Alabama and, of course, Walk the Line.
Now Ryan Philippe has been seen with Amanda Seyfried, a 25 year-old actress who stars on the television series Big Love, was in the film Mamma Mia! and has two movies coming out in 2011. Seems like Ryan is making the same mistake. Wonder if he'll be able to handle it again.
But Reese, on the other hand, just got engaged to Jim Toth, an agent at Hollywood's Creative Artists Agency. However, there's hope because Toth isn't just an agent, he's the co-head of the Motion Picture Talent division at the agency. Sounds like a good match even though he'll probably never match Reese's earning power. But at least he's forged his own career and success.
Do you agree with this theory, that it's hard for some men to be married to women who out earn them?
