Marriage Secrets From Hollywood Couples. Seriously.

Faith Hill & Tim McGraw

Faith Hill & Tim McGraw

When it comes to Hollywood marriages, we tend to think of the bad break-ups and the ugly divorces. In 2010 alone, dozens of Hollywood couples separated and/or divorced. To name a few: Courteney Cox and David Arquette, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds, and Eva Longoria and Tony Parker.

However, there are long-lasting marriages in Hollywood too. When director Blake Edwards passed away a few weeks ago, his wife of 41 years, Julie Andrews, was by his side. A perfect example of a Hollywood couple who were not only able to work together but were also able to make their marriage work.

And what about other Hollywood relationships that have held on, like Faith Hill and Tim McGraw who have been married for over 14 years?

What makes these marriages successful? Are there really any marital secrets we can learn from these Hollywood couples?

A few other couples who have been married a long time, at least by Hollywood standards:

  • Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith: 13 years
  • Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker: 13 years
  • Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick: 22 years
  • John Travolta and Kelly Preston: 19 years

So, it is possible. So what do all of these couples have in common that enables their marriages to stay out of the tabloids and intact?

Well, here are a few things they seem to have in common:

  • All of the couples make family a priority.
  • Interestingly, the men in each couple are older than their wives. Kevin Bacon is Kyra Sedgwick's elder by 7 years. John Travolta is 8 years older than Kelly Preston.
  • In each marriage, both husband and wife are actively pursuing their personal goals.
  • They all seem to keep their private lives (for the most part), and their families, out of the media.

Maybe some of the younger Hollywood couples should take a closer look at what has made these marriages last. Maybe we all should.

Are there other reasons that these couples are having marital success?

I think the problem with "hollywood marriages" is that they think they are in love when it's just that they've been together doing something (movie/tv etc.) constantly.  They need to be together like the rest of us normal peeps lol out/about and REALLY know each other....

Hollywood couples tend to marry because they don't want to be single ... at least that's what it seems like. There is nothing wrong with taking the time to know someone, all the good and bad, and then deciding if it is a lifelong commitment you're willing to make.

Yup, they probably talk open and honestly, support each other, and have their priorities straight.

I read online that Jada Pinkett and Will Smith have a polyamorous type of relationship. That they both still sleep with other people even though they are married. And they are both ok with it. Not sure how true it is though.

I dont see how having an "Open Marriage" is really a good marriage.  Pretty disgusting if you ask me.  I'm talking about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

Having a "open marriage" just isn't right. When you choose to marry you are choosing to be with someone and only that someone for the rest of your life. But most people doesn't see that anymore, for most women they see a way of not working and having someone take care of them while they do what ever they want. Well I am old fashion if you don't want a relationship with one person for the rest of your life don't get married. If you did that in the old days you would be killed or tossed away to the whore house and labeled unclean. But most just has no respect for them self anymore {men included on that one}

13 years doesn't seem that long to me. My husband and I have been married for five and that really is a short time. We've been together for over 10. 41 years though. That is awesome. <3

In Hollywood, 13 years is a lifetime.

I've also read that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have an 'open marriage.'  Probably a lot of people would have an easier time staying married if they were comfortable with infidelity.  I'm not sure if it's true since I obviously don't know them, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw them on this list.

Aside from the last one, of course (I'm not famous, and neither is my, my wonderful Husband and I have all of those in common with those successful celeb couples. Yay, Us! =]
