The story of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden’s relationship is a modern day fairy tale. The knight in shining armor swoops in and saves the damsel in distress from whatever ails her. In Nicole Richie’s case, it was a pair of DUIs, an alleged eating disorder and too much partying.
Now she’s a newlywed, a mother of two adorable kids and seemingly happy and healthy both physically and mentally. What changed it for her? Was it being with Joel Madden?
I think so.
Sure there may have been some therapy involved. And sure there's more at stake now that she's responsible for two little lives. Motherhood can definitely ground you. But, from what what I've read in the tabloids, the love of a good, sober man played a huge role in her transformation.
When I was younger, I believed that the person you're with shouldn't be responsible for your happiness. And that, to be happy in a relationship, you first have to be happy with yourself.
But as I've gotten older, and wiser, I've changed my thinking. No, you can't depend on someone else to make you happy but the best relationships do make you a better person. Having the support of a partner, someone to confide in, is important. Your partner should encourage you to push yourself and should help you realize your dreams. Someone you can bounce ideas off of, who reminds you how great you are and is there for you when things don't work out.
My husband does that for me. He's my biggest fan. And I hope I do that for him.
So, yes, I think Joel Madden has played a huge role in helping Nicole Richie turn her life around. They're lucky to have each other.
And I love a happy, fairy tale ending.
Do you think the right man can change you for the better?
