Getting engaged and then turning around and announcing that you called it off a few months later is pretty far up there on the awkward list. Trust me, I know from personal experience ... the Facebook status change was the worst, even if my reason was justified.
But broken engagements seem to happen even more so in the celebrity world -- Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen called off their year-long engagement just this week. We have long stopped expecting a walk down the aisle just because a female celeb is wearing a huge rock on her left ring finger. If she does, great, but if not, eh. They'll just join this long list of celebrities that have ended things before the wedding bells rang.
Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez: The original "Bennifer," they called off the wedding three days before the celebrations were to take place. I blame the train wreck, aka Gigli.
Brad Pitt & Gwyneth Paltrow: Before the perfect couple of Brad and Jen, and then Brad and Angelina, there was Brad and Gwyn. He always seems to land the "It" girl.
Lance Armstrong & Sheryl Crow: I started hating Lance when he dumped Sheryl, huge successful cancer battle or not. She was his #1 supporter, she dedicated an album to him, she waited for his divorce to finalize. He ended things because of her age and fertility issues. And then she got breast cancer. Geezus! At least she's happy now.
Katie Holmes & Chris Klein: Girl-next-door meets American Pie boy. And eight weeks after they broke up is when Katie started molding into what would later become known as TomKat.
Kanye West & Alexis Phifer: Kanye popped the question to his girlfriend of four years, Alexis, to honor his mother's wish. Unfortunately, 18 months later, the couple called it quits.
Levi Johnston & Bristol Palin: After learning she was pregnant right smack dab in the middle of her mother's vice-presidential campaign, Bristol and Levi became engaged at the ripe age of 17, but soon called it quits. Levi then whored himself out, attempting to turn himself into a quasi-celebrity by posing in Playgirl. It looked like he had finally settled down and proposed (again) earlier this year, but it just isn't meant to be. The two broke up (again) two weeks ago. But he might have gotten a reality show deal out of it.
Kiefer Sutherland & Julia Roberts: Just days before their wedding, Julia called it off reportedly because Kiefer had been having a little too much fun with a stripper. I think we all know who ended up being the winner of this breakup.
Tara Reid & Carson Daly: Remember them? Think back to 2000, around the same time MTV began to suck.
Casey Aldridge & Jamie Lynn Spears: Another teen mom, who was surprised when she and her baby's daddy called off their engagement? Not me.
Brian Austin Green & Megan Fox: The two dated, then got engaged, then ended the engagement but were still together, then got engaged again and now married. That's quite the tale to tell the kids.
Ryan Reynolds & Alanis Morissette: This union always boggled me -- they just didn't seem like they'd be each other's types. But now Ryan is married to hottie Scarlett Johansson going on two years and Alanis is recently married and preggers. Everyone has a happy ending!
Paris Latsis & Paris Hilton: Unfortunately, things didn't work out for Paris and Paris -- apparently the boy Paris's parents weren't thrilled to hear about her sex tape. Pfft ... in-laws.
Which celebrity couples do you wish made it to the altar?
