Ask Dad: What's a Great Anniversary Gift for My Husband?

Got a question about guys? Ask a guy. Ask Dad. Not your dad, a dad. As in, me.

I need an awesome idea for a 15th wedding anniversary gift. My husband is the greatest guy in the world and I want to show him how much I appreciate him. Any ideas?

Yes. Weekend trips away make great anniversary gifts and are more personal and lasting than a new TV or an iPad. And who doesn't love a mini-vacation?

Getting away from home gives you both a break from work and kids and household to-do lists, which means you can relax and focus on each other, as it should be on an anniversary.

Where you go will depend on your budget and what kinds of things you like to do, obviously. The beach or the mountains are always nice, but there are many other options too. A weekend away in a nearby city can be fun, even if it's a place not known for activities or shopping. Most cities have museums and parks, or you can get a nice hotel room and spend the weekend being lazy and enjoying the luxury (and each other -- wink wink). Just being somewhere other than home makes it a vacation, and having plans all weekend isn't necessary.

If fresh air and a bucolic groove are more your speed, you can find affordable countryside bed-and-breakfasts almost anywhere, or you can rough it in a tent at a state park, which are easy to find and affordable for anyone.

You can also get creative and find places with new things to do, like my wife did when we were visiting Northern California a few years ago -- she booked a mud bath for us at a spa in Calistoga. It wasn't something I would ever have planned, nor anything I ever want to do again, but I'm still glad I did it, if only to be able to tell a story about the time I spent an hour naked in a tub of hot horse manure (or so it smelled).

You get the idea. It doesn't really matter where you go or what you do. The key is getting away and being alone together. That's what an anniversary is all about.
