Seven-Year Itch: Why Do You Love Your Partner?

posted by isdisnormal

I came across an interesting topic the other day in the CafeMom Newcomers Club about falling in and out of love with your partner (known in married circles as the seven year itch). According to Census Bureau figures, the average first marriage that ends doesn't make it past eight years. Jademom07 asked the group, "how do you know if you love?"

It turns out that love isn't the easily defined term we expect it to be. In fact, the word means different things to different couples, the definition itself taking on many forms throughout a relationship. As athenax3 pointed out: "In relationships there tend to be cycles, times when you feel you love that person so much your heart could burst with it, and times when frankly the sight of them kind of makes you annoyed even though they haven't done a thing wrong." ( time I get into a fight with my boyfriend, I'll have to remember those words.)

So how do you get past the itch and prevent yourself from cheating? Relationship experts Dr. Charles D. Schmitz and Dr. Elizabeth Schmitz (married for 41 years) shared their Seven Secrets To Avoiding The Seven-Year Itch on Their secrets include being honest with your partner about your feelings and seeking a counselor if you both need help. (The first step is always admitting you have a problem.)

Ladies, pray tell: What are your tips for avoiding the one-year, three-year, seven-year itch? How do you keep your relationship passionate?
