"I had false expectations of what Andrew should do and should say, and how he should anticipate this, and then I felt wounded," she shares in an emotional new CafeMom Studios interview. More from The Stir: Touching Excerpt From Amy Robach's Book 'Better' Shows How Kids Can Help Us Heal

Here, Amy and Andrew share how they struggled with and ultimately handled her diagnosis as a couple in the midst of syncing up their parenting styles and careers and raising five kids. (Hint: It was no walk in the park!)

Amy and Andrew raise points that should resonate with so many couples -- those who've battled cancer and even those who haven't. No matter if it's a life-threatening disease, a financial curveball, or another physical or mental health challenge, life has a way of complicating relationships -- even if you and your partner already have a lot on your plates.

It's in those moments that you have to learn not only more about each other but also about yourself in order to better cope. For instance, Amy noted her tendency to try to "white-knuckle" her way through a hard time and, in turn, managed to let go. Undoubtedly, it's that self-awareness that not only helped her heal but also bolstered her partnership with Andrew.

And sure, in the midst of all the madness, it may not feel like you'll come out "unbreakable," but, as this power couple's experience shows, falling down together presents an opportunity to get back up -- stronger and more in sync than ever.
