The Size of Your Diamond Ring May Be Ruining Your Marriage

engagement ring size

The amount of money your husband spent on your engagement ring pretty much dictates the quality of your marriage. At least if you believe a new study that says the more expensive the ring, the more likely you are to divorce. Yikes.

The study from Emory University looked at 3,000 American adults who had all been married at some point. Those who bought or wore pricey engagement rings were more likely to end up divorced.

Men who spent $2,000 to $4,000 on engagement rings were 1.3 times more likely to see their marriages end than men who spent $500 to $2,000. Women who got more expensive engagement rings also experienced higher rates of divorce.

So, there you have it. But what does that mean for you?

Absolutely nothing at all. So you don't have to worry.

The researchers hypothesize the reason for the trend is that women who blow a lot of money on the wedding and engagement actually have more stress than the women who don't because, duh -- they're broke!

The truth is couples who are fixated on huge engagement diamonds might not be focused on the right things, period.

I happen to know what my husband spent back in 2002 when we got engaged. I was privy to the cost of my ring when we got it insured. And yet here we are, 12 years later, stronger than ever.

The fact is, random things like how much you spent on the engagement ring or the wedding are not predictors of much, but they can say a lot about who you are and what's important to you.

Was it important to me to have a big rock? No. I have a medium-sized diamond and am quite happy with it. Had he given me a smaller one, I would have been okay with that too. And to be honest, I wouldn't have complained if he'd blown the bank on a big sparkler either.

It was his call.

I think he knew that. And maybe that's the key. It's not the size of the rock that matters. It's the pressure. Some questions: Are you the kind of woman who would pressure your guy into buying a huge rock? Is he the kind of man who desperately needs to impress others? Or would you be thrilled with it no matter what size he chose? Did he get you a big ring because he wanted to make you smile?

If you're the latter two, then rest assured. You're fine.

If you're the former two, well, it's no wonder you're divorced!

Do you think the size of your ring affects your marriage?
