'50 Shades of Grey' Is Boosting Troubled Couples' Sex Lives

couple reading steamy novelEver since Fifty Shades of Grey blew up, it's been portrayed as mommy porn. Erotic trash targeted at desperate, horny, hard-up-for-sex soccer moms. And you know what? That's just plain sad. Because that limiting label couldn't be further from the truth. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not asserting that E.L. James' trilogy is great literature or anything as ludicrous as that! Just that the novels have turned out to be quite intriguing -- and useful -- to all different types of people. Including couples who are in therapy.

A licensed marriage and family therapist in Eugene, Oregon named Stephanie Steele (ha, first name of Twilight author plus last name of Fifty Shades heroine -- how fitting!) recently told the local press that couples are coming to her with a copy of James' book in hand ...

Steele admits:

Surprisingly, I have had couples that have actually been reading it together. The most beneficial results are when they read it out loud to each other, which I find very interesting.

That is interesting! Although I'm not as surprised when I hear this. The fact is ... these books have hit a nerve with women, because they want to share Christian and Ana's experiences -- or their own version of those experiences -- with their partner. Fantasies are fabulous, and so is self-pleasure, but if they're actually able to share what turns them on in the book with their partner, hello! Double the fun!

Not that reading the book together automatically means you'll be off to the races with a riding crop and a Dom-Sub contract. In fact, depending on what parts you read together, you might find yourself indulging in a fit of giggles instead. But hey, I'm sure the communication involved in the process is more likely than not to bring couples closer than ever before. So maybe it's not nearly as a crazy or cheesy or ridiculous an idea as it initially sounds ...

Would you or have you read Fifty Shades of Grey with your partner? Do you think it could/did boost your sex life?
