Vera Wang Dresses May Have Provided Clues About Her Troubled Marriage

Vera WangAnother day, another high-profile couple is splitting. Today news comes that Vera Wang, whose name has long been associated with love, joy, and fairytale, happily-ever-after weddings, is separating from her husband, Arthur Becker, after 23 years of marriage.

Her company's president, Mario Grauso, issued the following statement to WWD: “Vera Wang and Arthur Becker have mutually and amicably agreed to separate. They remain devoted parents to their two daughters.”

It feels particularly depressing that the woman whose dresses have accompanied so many women down the aisle into marriage, is now seeing her own crumble. And after so many years together. Of course, we know that good marriages have  nothing to do with dresses, but it's still heartbreaking to hear.

You have to wonder what happened, and if the marriage was troubled for a long time. Some say there were signs that it was.

The obvious one is her Fall 2011 collection and the black wedding dresses she sent down the runway. Was this a statement on the dark place her marriage was in? It's hard now in hindsight to believe they weren't somehow influenced by her personal life. While many applauded her creativity and ingenuity at the time, their inspiration may have been more meaningful than anyone knew.

Perhaps it's just a coincidence, but it certainly makes the dresses seem darker than ever.

As for the Vera Wang business -- which Wang and Becker run together -- Grauso told the publication that it won't be affected by the split. "They will not let this impact the running of the company. They have worked too hard to build it up.”

It is just a separation at this point, and there's been no mention of a divorce yet. So perhaps there's a chance they can still make the marriage work, but if not, hopefully they'll both find happiness elsewhere.

Do you think the black dresses were a sign that Vera Wang's marriage was on the rocks?
