Alec Baldwin's Marriage Proposal Isn't Exactly Scandalous

Alec & Hilaria get cozy at the 2011 U.S. Open
It's official: Alec Baldwin is engaged to his yoga instructor girlfriend Hilaria Thomas! The hot-headed 30 Rock actor popped the Q to Hilaria during a romantic getaway in Montauk, Long Island (love it there!), and all was revealed yesterday when Hilaria flashed her square-cut Cartier rock to photogs. The two have been together for a while now, so it's really no surprise that they're finally taking the plunge.

But annoyingly, one aspect of the relationship still seems to be a surprise to some naysayers: Their age difference. Alec just turned 54, and Hilaria is 28. As one blog noted, Hilaria was still in high school when Alec's marriage to Kim Basinger imploded. Um ... okay. Are we really still "tsk, tsk"-ing a notable age gap between lovers? Decades after the Don Drapers and Roger Sterlings of the world made 20-something secretaries their second wives? Years after the release of the funny flick The First Wives' Club? Really?

It's about time we collectively, as a society, get over this whole "May/December relationship" blather -- for both sexes. Older guy with younger chickadee is a tale as old as time, but I'm so sick of hearing about how Madonna and Demi Moore and other women in Hollywood in their 40s and 50s are cradle-robbers, too. It's like we assume, on some level, that the older person in the relationship is taking advantage of someone who happens to be 20-25 years their junior. Which is so silly!

In a quest for someone who was my equal when it came to maturity, I've almost always dated older guys. Not like I was seeing guys in their 40s or 50s when I was in my early 20s -- more like 30s. But if I was single now at 28, I wouldn't rule out dating a guy in his 40s or maybe even 50s. That's because I feel like age isn't really an issue ... unless, of course, you make it one. As long as you see eye-to-eye on the big stuff (children, money, sex), there shouldn't be a problem.

The bottom-line: Only two people in a relationship know what their connection is all about. It's not anyone else's business to judge, name-call, or get all bent out of shape because the lovebirds just happen to be from different generations.

Are you skeptical about Alec Baldwin's relationship with Hilaria Thomas? How do you feel about big age gaps like theirs in relationships?
