Christie Brinkley's 'Today Show' Breakdown Was a Long Time Coming (VIDEO)

Christie Brinkley breakdownBy now, you have to have been living under a rock to not heard about Christie Brinkley's emotional discussion with Matt Lauer on The TODAY Show yesterday. After four years of keeping mum on the subject of her messy divorce from very outspoken ex-husband Peter Cook, Lauer got her to address the situation, and it wasn't pretty. (Which is saying a lot, being that Christie is the prettiest 58-year-old most of us have ever seen!)

At times, the convo got a bit argumentative, and toward the end, Christie got choked up, but her bottom-line was this: "I have turned the other cheek. There's not one quote from me, anywhere. This is the first time I've ever been on a show (to talk about the split)."

Maybe the fact that she got so emotional is a sign she should have discussed it sooner?

I'm not saying she should have been jumping on all of the interview opportunities she was handed or acted like Cook and spewed her side of the story and name-calling galore to anyone who would listen. But maybe somewhere along the line, in the past four years, she could have written a book, or had a heart-to-heart with just Oprah. Because it's obvious the poor woman has been repressing a lot of this, and as a result, it happened to come out in a big way yesterday.

It's really hard to understand how some people are able to keep their difficult relationship issues pent-up for so long, but it cannot be healthy. Of course there's a certain, respectful way to go about addressing the problems (especially when there are kids involved, as Matt Lauer pointed out). But putting all this drama on a shelf for years while you act like life is a-okay? Obviously, judging from Christie's situation, doing that definitely comes back to bite you when you least expect it.

Here's the video of her "breakdown" ...

Do you think Christie should have talked about this sooner?
