Woman Sues Ex Over Stolen Jokes & It's No Laughing Matter

gavelI'm not a litigious person, but if there was an opportunity to be on People's Court, you know I'd break out my cheapest dress, put on some lip liner, and march right on down to the courthouse set with Law for Dummies under my arm. I'd certainly fight for justice if there were T.V. cameras involved, and I'm thinking that maybe Nora Brank and I are cut from the same cloth. She's a young woman who took her boyfriend Nicolas Maier to The People's Court seeking restitution because he stole her jokes.

Tee hee hee.

Yes, she's suing him because he allegedly stole her stand-up routine word for word.

Nora's got a point, you can't exactly go around stealing intellectual property. Whether or not she's actually pissed about it remains to be seen because as Jezebel pointed out, the two host a variety show together. Maybe the whole People's Court thing was for publicity, maybe it wasn't, but one thing's for sure, breakups, real or fake, can get combative.

I can understand why married couples have pre-nups, I'm fully willing to sign one myself, but when it comes to couples who've been dating for a long time and living together, the gray areas of what's yours and what's his can get very blurry when you decide to move on. I can't think of a way to prevent that, either -- it's not like you want pink and blue stickers on all the stuff in your apartment to mark his stuff and yours. That seems not only unsightly, but downright gloomy.

I guess the best you can hope for is that you've chosen a partner who's mature, kind, and level-headed so that if things don't work out, you don't have to drag him to court to sort out the mess. And if you're really lucky, you'll date someone willing to make up an argument, be fake-sued, and appear on a TV court show over a stolen stand-up routine. Looking at you, Nick and Nora.

Have you ever had a messy breakup where dividing up your stuff got ugly?
