Kobe Bryant's Wife Picked an Unfortunate Time to Get Divorced

Kobe and Vanessa Bryant

There is no optimal time to get a divorce and officially end a marriage, but in Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant's case the timing is particularly awful considering there are two little children involved. Merry Christmas, kids, Mommy and Daddy are splitting up! Ho, ho, ho! But there's little doubt that Vanessa Bryant's reached the end of her rope (caught him cheating again) and when you get to that point in the marriage and make the decision, you end it as soon as possible. It doesn't really matter if it's during the holidays or someone's birthday or another important time. You want to and deserve to end the pain and move on to the next chapter as quickly as possible.

I just hope the couple's two daughters from their 10 1/2 year marriage, 8-year-old Natalia and 5-year-old Gianna, don't forever associate Christmas or Hanukkah or Kwanza or whatever December holiday their family celebrates as the time of year when Mommy left Daddy.

Apparently this was Vanessa's call and Kobe is miserable and determined to win her back. Good luck with that, dude.

Not sure how hard it would have been to fake it for a few more weeks so the kids could have one more "normal" family holiday, but I guess when you are married to this challenge of a husband and a father, you get out when you can. Lord knows Bryant was not setting the best examples for his daughters by yelling gay slurs at referees, getting into scuffles at church (church!), repeatedly cheating on his wife, and just being an all-round big-headed jerk. And kids are smart, they pick up on the truth despite our best acting performances. It's really one big lose-lose.

The only positive in this whole sad situation -- for the kids -- is that is seems like Bryant isn't being a total a-hole about the split. He didn't sign a pre-nup, so half of his $150 million will go to his 29-year-old former model wife, including their mansion and family home. Vanessa Bryant is seeking full custody, only giving Bryant visitation rights, in what appears to have been already worked out between the lawyers before all this went public. Kobe even let Vanessa keep the $4 million ring he gave her after the 2003 cheating scandal (damn right he should). As far as celebrity divorces go, especially when that celebrity divorce shark Laura Wasser is one of the involved, it seems like it's going as smoothly and as civilly as it possibly can. If that's true, maybe that really is a holiday gift in disguise.

Is it in the best interest of the children for parents to avoid divorce during the holidays? Is there ever a good time to drop that bomb?
