Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher's Divorce Was Inevitable, and That's Why It's Sad

Ashton Kutcher tweetIT'S OVER. Just as the hard-working rumor mill has been suggesting for months, it's officially sad times for the marriage of Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Demi announced her plans to divorce her husband of six years today. In a statement to AP, Moore's choice words definitely put her at the helm of the divorce decision and seem to confirm rumors of Ashton's infidelity:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.

I don't know. I sort of expected to be like, "Coulda seen that coming ...," but instead I'm feeling a little sad. Sad, mostly, because we're all just a bunch of frickin' cliches.

Sure, when the celebrity couple with the a 16-year age gap married in 2005, there was a lot of negativity, my own included. People said it would never last. Said he'd cheat. Break her heart. Leave her in time over a younger woman. But God, did Ashton have to be such a frickin' cliche? Sheesh. Did he have to do all of the above? If the rumor mill is right, he did.

And for that matter, did Demi also have to do such the cliche woman thing and fall in love with this guy who probably had more in common with her daughters than her, hoping she'd turn his world upside down, believing love could and would conquer all. Gag ...

Sure, Ashton is a totally @sshole if he cheated, but Demi must have seen at least some of the writing on the wall and still hoped for a miracle anyway.

Maybe the real problem is simply my own. Maybe my secret closeted romantic (woman) self is just miffed to admit I was rooting for them. I think I seriously hoped this oddball couple would prove us all wrong, slap away all the cliches, and make it through the years. I totally couldn't wait to see a 60-year old Ashton, walking lovingly with a 76-year old Demi. Because if a cursed celebrity couple like Demi and Ashton could make a marriage work, then the rest of us married couples who have a lot less going against us definitely could, right?

Ashton, the ever-loyal tweeter has responded via Twitter:

I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi.

Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK

God, it's even cliche that he's playing up the ex-devoted Mr. Nice Guy ... No doubt the next people they date will be the biggest cliches of all!

Were you secretly hoping Demi and Ashton could make it work when they married six years ago?
