Google+ Thinks You're Embarrassed By Your Divorce

google Have you gotten the all-mighty Google+ invitation yet? The latest in social networking, Google+ includes circles and "plus ones" ... and boy is it so fun. I think? It's confusing. I don't really get it. I signed up this weekend and still have very little clue how to use it, but hopefully someone will be able to teach this old dog a new trick or two. Anyway, I thought I'd start my foray into Google+ by setting up my profile. Seemed like an easy enough thing to do -- answer some basic questions about myself, upload a photo, and viola!

But there was one part of this "easy" profile set up that got me a little confused. Under the "Relationship" part, there's a drop down from which you choose how you define your status.

But Google forgot something. Where's the "divorced" option?

You can chose from:

  • I don't want to say
  • Single
  • In a relationship
  • Engaged
  • Married
  • It's complicated
  • In an open relationship
  • Widowed
  • In a domestic partnership
  • In a civil union

I'm sure you noticed that "Divorced" and "Separated" are missing. I don't know about you, but that's pretty surprising. With the divorce rate what it is, don't you agree that there's probably a lot of people out there who'd like to select that they're divorced?

It's an oversight. It's not that we're entirely defined by our relationships, but divorced is a much a part of a person's past as it is their future. Is Google trying to say that people shouldn't admit if they are (GASP) divorced? Come on. Everyone is either divorced or about to be. OK OK that's not true, but you know what I mean. It's not like it's 1940 and the "d" word is something unthinkable or something to be ashamed of. It's 2011.

I never thought I'd have to say this, but get with the program, Google. If you're going to allow us to chose "In an open relationship" you gotta let us say we're divorced.

What do you think about Google+ leaving "divorced" and separated off the list?
