George Clooney Is Single Again for All the Right Reasons

george clooneySo, George Clooney didn't exactly shock anybody by breaking up with his girlfriend of nearly two years, Elisabetta Canalis. The term perpetual bachelor has been thrown around a lot. So has commitment-phobe. There he goes again, is the overwhelming sentiment. When is he just going to settle down?

I'll tell you when, if he's smart (which he obviously is): Never! Why would a guy like Clooney settle down (operative word being "settle")? I'm going to alienate a lot of ladies when I say this, but I completely understand why Clooney doesn't want to commit to one woman for the rest of his life.

It's because he knows himself well enough to predict that no matter how amazing his girlfriend or wife may be, that restless feeling will most likely come over him again ... the time will come to ramble on, so to speak. That's the point when most people either have an affair or get divorced, or both. Why bother? You can still have intense, meaningful relationships with people without signing the rest of your life away.

Like Clooney, I was married once, and I know how hard it is, even though my ex is a great guy. I also get that there are huge rewards to marriage: Someone to grow old with. Someone who's there for you in sickness and health, through snow, sleet, dark of night (oh wait -- that's the mailman). It works for some people.

But like Clooney, I know myself and my wandering nature and how fits of passion can consume me for a time and then ... evaporate. (Oh, and in case you're wondering, yes, I grew up without my dad, who was known for being quite the Don Juan. So go ahead and connect the dots, I don't care.) And sometimes I wonder, would I just be setting myself and someone else up for heartache if I were to walk down the aisle again? Do commitment-phobes really need to reform? Can't we all just get along?

I'm still not sure if I fall into the category of a die-hard like Clooney. But I guess that makes sense. I don't want to commit to being a commitment-phobe any more than I want to get tied down forever.

Do you understand why some people never settle down?
