Showtime’s ‘Gigolos’ Is the All Male ‘Sex in the City’ (VIDEO)

cast member of gigolosLast night while my husband and I were enjoying a romantic dinner of frozen burritos and Entertainment Tonight (or was it Access Hollywood?), a segment came on about Showtime's new show, Gigolos. If you haven't heard of this fine piece of programming that's about to grace our TVs, let me fill you in: It's a reality show about gigolos. Male sluts. Hookers. Prostitutes. And that pretty much covers it.

However, the three-minute spot I saw on whatever crap show I was watching was in-sane. I actually stopped eating for thirty seconds -- that's how crazy it was. It painted these whores in a sympathetic, "aw shucks" kind of light, complete with shots of them crying while saying things like, "I didn't think this would be my life." Clearly, Showtime thinks they've filled their "sophistication quota" with Shameless, but beyond that, could you imagine if this were a show about female prostitutes?

Something tells me it would have more of a seedy feel, oh, I don't know, like HBO's Cathouse or any of the other hooker documentaries that always seem to be airing between the hours of 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. When we watch these shows, we go, "Eww!" Or "Haha, I can't believe she said that! What an idiot!" We don't say "Aww! She's so cute." Or "She's totally going to be a star."

That's exactly what it feels like with Gigolos. I mean, they were on a "news show" at 7 p.m. on a Thursday! It seems like they're grooming them to be legitimate reality show stars. It's only a matter of time before one of them hooks hooks up with Tamra Barney or Lindsay Lohan.

It's a long-standing stigma that it's "totally okay" for men to sleep with as many women as they want (studs), but women shouldn't dare (sluts). With Gigolos, and the scripted show Hung (where Thomas Jane is part prostitute, part lovable rascal), it seems like the TV world is really driving that notion home. Isn't it 2011? Shouldn't we have made progress. Didn't we make progress?

Shame on you, Showtime, for promoting this show in such a light. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how you portray the clientele.

Check out the trailer and see what you think. Kind of looks like an all-male Sex in the City, dontcha think?

What do you think of the new show Gigolos?
