I used to have a serious crush on Edward Norton (did you see 25th Hour? Hello!) -- I'm over it now -- so, it's okay that he got engaged to his girlfriend of six years. The lucky lady is Shauna Robertson, and she's a producer who's worked on movies like Knocked Up, Superbad, and Pineapple Express. Oh, and she and Norton founded Crowdrise, a charity that's helping the people of Japan. And she's lovely, but not in a freak-of-nature-supermodel kind of way! Um, can somebody say totally normal and really cool girl? I love it!
Is it just me, or is it one of those weird, small pleasures in life when an actor dates and/or marries a non-famous member of society? Perhaps it's because it instills a false sense of hope in all of our hearts? Or maybe it's just because it seems like they'll actually last?
I know, I know. There are exceptions to the rule. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas. That's great for them, congrats, but we all know that there is a crazy high divorce rate among Hollywood couples. And it's probably because, well, they're actors.
Don't get me wrong, actors are great. They make us laugh. They make us cry. They keep many a magazine and blog in business. But it's scientifically proven that actors are more narcissistic than the average person. And what comes with narcissism? Let's see, skewed view of reality, sense of entitlement, inability to think you're wrong, just to name a few.
And of course they're narcissistic! They're surrounded by people telling them they're amazing, talented, and fah-bulous 24/7. Not to mention the fact that they have access to anything they want (including other people) at any given moment.
So, imagine if you will, two people like this in a relationship. It's ... well, not only gross, it's a recipe for disaster. I think that if you can squeeze one "normal person" in there, he or she will balance the craziness of the other person. In turn, longer relationship.
So, I'm happy for Ed Norton. I bear no ill-feelings towards him for my once unrequited love. I think Shauna seems like a totally rad chick. And I think they'll be together for a really long time.
What do you think of celebrities dating non-famous people?
