OkCupid Sold? Now I'll Never Get a Date!

Just in time for Valentine's Day, two online dating sites are getting hitched. OkCupid has been acquired by Match.com for a cool $50 mil. in cash-ola. Match is all hot and bothered over OkCupid, because the free dating site has been on its A-game. It's got singles galore, thanks to "a more casual, low-hurdle dating environment that has resonated with younger adults," according to the press release announcing the coupling.

Now, as much as I'd like to be happy for these two "lovebirds," I just can't. The union is annoying to hear about, and it's not a win for daters either. Here's why ...

If you've ever gone fishing for a mate online, you know that Match.com is like the McDonald's of online dating sites. It's completely generic. EVERYONE is on it. Seriously, it's more packed with people than New York Penn Station at 5:30 p.m. on a Tuesday. Because of the crowds, good-looking, normal gals must contend with an onslaught of men, 90 percent of whom are total freaks/nerds/players/weirdos.

OkCupid ... Yeah, in my past experience -- it's pretty much the same, except free (and therefore even more skeezy). So, it's no wonder this pair of sites is a match made in heaven: Completely random relationship and hook-up seekers prowl on both sites -- it's a throng of lust and love-seeking insanity that is out of control. It's not "the more daters, the merrier," it's "the more daters, the more debauchery." I'm telling you!

And now that they're converging on one another in a hot, sticky mess of online dating site co-promotion ... well, it's just going to be even more chaotic for serious daters.

Furthermore, I'll bet that profit-minded Match is running the show for freebie OkCupid, you might be even LESS likely to find love on either site. Why?

Just check out what Greg Blatt, CEO of IAC said in the press release:

"This acquisition therefore goes a long way toward our objectives of bringing new people into the online dating world, offering the ability to meet in whatever type of online setting, and at whatever commitment level, our members desire, and facilitating a seamless evolution of the online dating experience without ever having to leave our portfolio of sites."

Sure, he might mean that online daters can get any flavor of ice cream they wish on IAC's "portfolio of sites" ... But they are running a business. The more months you go without finding the love of your life on OkCupid, the more likely you are to hop on board and pay the bigger bucks for Match. Hence, OkCupid is Match's GATEWAY DRUG to online dating addiction! I can just see them now, throwing cupid arrows at dartboards covered in some hopeless guy's OkCupid profile picture. Sigh.

If you're serious about finding someone this Valentine's Day, it probably pays to think twice before getting involved in a twisted threesome with IAC's love children.

Have you ever tried OkCupid or Match?
