Regina King & Malcolm Jamal Warner: Old Friends Make the Best Lovers

Regina KingActress Regina King is becoming a star at spinning gold out of things that have been pulled out of the closet. First it was her TV show, Southland, that had been dumped by NBC and is now a cult hit thanks to being rescued by TNT. And now it's her new fiance, Malcolm Jamal Warner.

They were both child stars in the '80s -- him on the Cosby Show, her on 227 -- and it was as kids that they first met. Fast forward three decades, and the two old friends are now shacking up and getting hitched. Turns out retreads can be as good for the love life as they are for the career.

For the single ladies out there, it wouldn't be a bad idea to follow in King's footsteps. It tends to work well for divorcees who seek out their old childhood flame and end up hitched to them for the rest of their lives.

Perhaps one of the most moving stories to come out of the horrors in Tucson, Arizona, over the weekend was that of Dorwan and Mavy Stoddard, childhood sweethearts who reunited after both were widowed. On Saturday, during the shooting, Dorwan threw himself on Mavy's body to protect her from the bullets. He died; she lived.

We tend to look at graduating from high school and getting away as an escape, and society certainly supports it. There's a definite mindset that youth and love never mix, or at least never successfully.

But 10 years into marriage to my childhood sweetheart, I can't help but be encouraged every time a star marries an old childhood pal. There's a contentment in the knowledge that they knew you at your most awkward, dorkiest moments, and they still accept and love you. And as King points out in her upcoming JET Magazine interview, you often have a relationship rooted in common ground:

Malcolm and I have a lot in common; we've both been child actors and were also blessed to be raised by incredible mothers who instilled good values in us. Things are maturing nicely.

Good luck to the couple!
