Royal Engagement Photos -- Who Shines More, Will, Kate, or the Ring?

Prince William & Kate Middleton engagement photoWow, how happy do these two look? Prince William and Kate Middleton (or, as the Clarence House Press Office prefers, Miss Catherine Middleton) released their official engagement photos over the weekend, taken by fashion photographer Mario Testino, who did one of the last photo shoots with William's mother, Princess Diana, for Vanity Fair that hit newsstands a month before her death in 1997.

They took a casual one (right) and a more formal one (below) in the Cornwall Room in St. James's Palace and boy does that prominently placed ring just pop out in both.

I'm actually surprised that they released such a PDA shot (and I use that term loosely, this is the British Royal Family that we're talking about here). Compared to Prince Charles and Diana's "cutesy" engagement photo, William and Kate's casual one is extremely modern.

Even in the traditional portrait, their happiness just seems to exude right off the page. And trying to look formal yet happy and completely in love is pretty hard to do. That's why you end up with a bunch of awkward engagement photos and the couple prefers to give out copies of ones where they're looking at each other while frolicking through a meadow instead of straight-on shots like this one.

Perfect storybook photos to lead up to what will inevitably be a fairytale wedding and marriage, am I right?
