I've never cheated, nor have I ever been cheated on (*knock on wood), but just the idea of it sends my stomach into a nervous pile of knots.
Would I, could I, ever be okay with knowing my significant others' lips were on someone else?
What about if I gave him permission?
I recently saw the movie The Freebie, which tackled this very issue. Starring Dax Shepard and Katie Aselton (who also wrote and directed it ... talented girl!), it told the story of a couple who were in a perfectly happy relationship -- they just lacked a sex life. In order to spice things up, they each gave each other a "freebie", a one-night stand, no strings attached, no questions asked.
I won't spoil the film for you, but I will say that it was pretty predictable. Because really, what good could possibly come from that idea?
Some people would argue that, even though feelings are hurt with freebies, it can make a relationship stronger. That if you're truly right for each other, then you'll survive -- if not, well, you're just not meant to be. And if the couple is open and honest with each other, it can help remind them of their love for each other.
Except for the one small fact that you totally just broke the person's heart.
No matter how strong a relationship may be, it's never going to be the same after someone has swayed. And that has nothing to do with the strength of the relationship, but everything to do with being human.
Jealous and trust issues will be forever ingrained, and no amount of pre-discussions or romps in the sack with a stranger can help overcome that. And if a freebie actually helps your relationship, then I'm sorry girlfriend, you got a whole lotta other issues you need to work out.
What about you? Do think a "freebie" would hurt or help a relationship?
