Bedtime Sex or Younger Skin: You Can't Have Both

Bathroom sinkMy getting ready for bed routine is bad for my sex life because the older I get, the more time and effort it takes to complete.

When I was in my 20s, if I even washed my face before I went to bed, it was a good night. And I was young, living in New York City and having lots of sex. No problems there.

In my 30s, after I had kids, I started to pay closer attention to the health of my skin and started using a few products at night. I was married, not too happy and not having a lot of sex. A few problems there.

But now that I'm in my 40s, remarried, very happy and trying to have more sex, my nighttime routine is complicated and time-consuming. And if I don't do it, I wake up looking like a clown or worse: an old(er) lady.

The routine goes something like this:

  1. Wash face with special cleanser to minimize rosacea
  2. Put prescription lotion on nose, also to minimize rosacea
  3. Apply eye cream then face/neck cream
  4. Mouthwash followed by electric toothbrush for two minutes
  5. Plus additional brushing of my top and bottom retainers before I put them in
  6. Lip moisturizer
  7. And finally, body lotion

The whole process takes 15 minutes. It's depressing. By the time I'm done, my husband is already snoring. Sexy man.

Sure there are ways around this. We could have sex before I get ready for bed. But after we're done, I'm too relaxed and tired to get out of bed and wash up.

Or we could have sex at other times.

I do enjoy a romp with the morning wood. I'm not so into the bad breath, especially my retainer breath. But we don't have to kiss or even breathe on each other if we're spooning.

Plus there's always daytime sex now that the kids are back in school. And at least I'll know that, thanks to my bedtime routine, my skin looks really good in the daylight.

Does your getting ready for bed routine interfere with your sex life?
