How Does Vasectomy Improve Your Love Life? Let Me Count the Ways ...

Man in surgeryAfter 20 years of being sexually active, I finally found my favorite form of birth control.

A vasectomy.

I got married in my late 20s. Had two children. Got divorced in my mid-30s. And then re-married a few years later to a wonderful man who had a daughter.

I had an IUD when my husband and I were dating. I never had any problems with it. I didn't even know it was there. And I foolhardily believed myself to be pregnancy proof. On an annual visit to my doctor, a few months after my husband and I had gotten married, I was shocked to find that the IUD had fallen out. Not all of the way out, just hanging part way out of my cervix. And I don't know how long it had been in that position.

I was thrilled to find out that I wasn't pregnant.

But the experience scared me. Neither my husband nor I wanted any more children. Three is enough. They're great kids: healthy, smart, funny, and fun to be with. But I'm happy to not have any more. And even though I have always been, and will continue to be, pro-choice, I don't think that at this point in my life I could choose abortion.

So, we were looking for a 100 percent positive way to prevent pregnancy from happening.

Another IUD was not an option. I couldn't trust it. And at the age of 40, I didn't want to go on the pill again. I had been on it in my 20s and 30s and had issues with weight gain and decreased libido. Not a good combination.

My husband had a friend who had recently gotten a vasectomy. Despite sitting on frozen peas for a few days, his friend said it wasn't really a big deal. So my husband volunteered to have it done. We figured it was less invasive than me having my tubes tied.

A few weeks later, he had the procedure done. Just a couple of hours in the outpatient facility.

And ever since he got the "no sperm in the semen" all clear, two months after the surgery, we've been worry-free and spontaneous. No tire factory smell from condoms, no spermicidal mess, and no moodiness or weight gain. Just good, mostly clean, sex.

I've got to say that the vasectomy is the best thing that either my husband or I have ever done for our sex life. Besides the semi-Brazilian bikini wax.

Is a vasectomy your birth control of choice?
