On the day the world celebrated its mothers, one mom stabbed the father of her two kids to death. Why? Because the Mother's Day gifts he bought her were too cheap.
It's almost unimaginable, but this is the sickening reality two young Beaumont, Texas boys face after a deadly Mother's Day brawl. Paige Parkerson was charged with first degree murder after killing her boyfriend Clifton Barkin.
It was a horrific turn in what Barkin likely thought would be a sweet Mother's Day celebration. After picking up flowers and a card at Walmart that evening, he went home to Parkerson, who reportedly went ballistic over the low-budget gifts. According to Barkin's mother Evetta Wright, Parkerson expected something more expensive, like jewelry.

14 Ways to Be a Happier Mom
It's an extra special Mother's Day this year, because my kids are finally old enough to know the true meaning behind the Hallmark holiday, which is ... just give Mommy a break, okay? No fancy gifts required. At all. Just give me a day with no fights, no whining, no messes. Just get along, give Mom some peace and quiet, some alone time with a book, and that would be just about the best day ever.
I was talking to my husband earlier in the week about what I wanted for Mother's Day. He asked. Sort of. But yes, I was that person, making demands about the gifts he should bestow me with for all the hard work it takes to be me, a mom of now 17-month-old twins. I was in mid-sentence, saying something that probably sounded like me me me me me when I realized I was being a fool (a fool who just the day before went on a pricey H&M shopping spree -- they have Swedish Hasbeens for $60!). So I told him, you know what? I just want some pretty flowers and maybe you can bake me some chocolate chip cookies. Hubs said, I would have done that anyway. Oh swoon!
It's Mother's Day. And when you are a mother, even though you want all of the love and the relaxation the day can offer, it's important not to forget about the amazing mom that has been there for you, through thick and through thin.
If you're like me, you grew up with several mom options on Mother's Day. There is the actual mom, the grandmothers, the stepmothers, the step-grandmothers ... it can be overwhelming. However, it did sensitize me to the fact that there were many women who cared for me, and on that special day, they all should be recognized. Or at least telephoned to say "Happy Mother's Day, I love you."

The first Mother's Day is such an important milestone in the life of any mom (and baby, too!). I still remember mine so well and my husband worked hard to make it extra memorable.
